Lighting up Brentwood Christmas 2011

Dodd Road Church took part in Brentwood’s annual event when the Christmas Lights are switched on.

Before the lights were turned there was a carnival atmosphere all the way along Brentwood’s High Street with various stalls that all entertained the visitors.

There was a strong Christian influence throughout the day with Choirs and bands playing Christmas songs and carols.

Our contribution was to have a stand where we gave out sweets to everybody and the children were very willing to take a sweet.

We also had the opportunity to share a little of God’s love with many of the people who stopped to take a sweet and chat.

OUR FATHER – The complete course

Matthew 6.

When Ann and I moved to London to take up our first pastorate, the Christian organisation we worked with rented a small two-bedroom flat for us in an alley that was invariably used as a toilet by people coming out of the local pub. Yet it was very much the home that our heavenly Father provided for us.

Eighteen months later a local Christian from another fellowship visited our church on two consecutive Sundays. He approached the organisation supporting us, and offered them his house at £50,000 below market value. We moved into that house ten months later.

Jesus loves you

In every town, children would come running from all over to gather around Him. Somehow, they could see that Jesus was very different from anyone they had ever met. People of all ages would come to hear His powerful words and see His awesome miracles. But the children wanted to be close to Him because of His gentle ways and His kindness. He made each child feel important—like being the kid of a mighty King. He would pick up the little children in His arms, put His hands on the bigger kids and bless each one.

The Extra Mile

Sebastian Steinzen, 34, from Gladbeck, spent five years trying to find Patrick Burns to repay a wager he lost during a game of golf. The pair met whilst on holiday with their families in Majorca back in 2005. During the holiday, Mr Steinzen and Pat placed a bet worth a pint of beer on how close they could get the ball to the flag. Unfortunately, the German didn’t get a chance to pay up and has carried a five-year burden of guilt until now.

Butterflies

What is it about butterflies that I so love? Is it their beauty, and their grace? Is it their strength in flight, those wings beating so fast? Is it the transformation their fragile bodies go through to pass from ugliness to magnificence? And yet, they live so fleetingly- their exotic flight but a snapshot in Creation’s eternal portrait.

In these delicate creatures I see humanity. In our Father’s eyes we are things of great beauty, moulded through love, and set free to fly. Yet, we flitter from all that comes against us, driven by our need to run, to hide, to search – unsettled, vulnerable, afraid.
